New Reads {#SOL16 Day 9}

I feel like I'm pretty up to date on children and young adult literature.
After all... I am a third grade teacher.

My husband is a 5th grade teacher.. so other than board books for our 2 year old
most of the reading material that is in our house can be purchased from a scholastic book order.

Now, even though I wish I had some adult time to read some of my own books,
having these great children's books always around is a wonderful thing.

I find that it's very important to read and keep up on what
is popular for the kids.  I try my hardest to find new authors,
a different series, or the next big thing when it comes to books.

A lot of times teaching 3rd grade, students are ready for something new.

Something exciting!
They've been reading Junie B and
Magic Treehouse and now they want more.

Now don't get me wrong. I also have plenty of those above series of books
in my library at school.  However, most kids have read read read them over and over.

I always am looking for something to hook them into
wanting to find their own adventures in books
and I feel like I hit the jackpot.

So, call me crazy but I must have been living under a rock,
because of the first time this year I've read
 Esperanza Rising and Snow Treasure.

Have you read these books with your students or with a group of students?
OMG!  How have I never read them before??
No seriously, that was a question.

I have found myself more just as excited to read these books
along with my students.

Since I haven't read either of them until this year,
I was reading with them at the same time.
It was all new, and exciting for me just like it was for them.

I wouldn't let anyone talk about it until I could go home and read what I needed to read.
Nobody could give anything away...
and trust me...
If they had the opportunity to do the reading at school, they wanted to talk!

It just revived me into wanting to find some other books that I might have missed here or there.

What are some that you suggest?

I've made it to day 9 in the SOL writing challenge.
I'm excited to be sharing with some wonderful people!

Have a great day!
Ana

  1. I was captivated by Snow Treasure when I was in school. I just had to look up the copyright date, 1942! That cover is the one I remember and I read it in the '60s. I just read Esperanza Rising this year too. There are so many great books, this is a journey you have to do yourself.

    1. I had so many people tell me that they too loved this book as a child! I can't believe that it's still so popular! :) I am just loving when I find something that makes my kiddos and myself so happy!

  2. Hi there! So glad to hear you are seeking new books for your students. I know we fall in love with authors from the past but there are so many new authors for kids to devour! I just read Mountain Dog and Always Abigail and loved them. I am also reading Zane and the Hurricane. I use our states library association for recs, and book awards like Coretta Scott King, Tejas, Tomas Rivera, etc as well as my friends suggestions. Here is a site with a link to other national book winners: https://texasbluebonnetaward2017.wordpress.com/
The cool thing is that if you click on the book links on the left, you will have a treasure of well crafted resources provided by the committee. Reader's theater scripts, author interviews... you name it. Please let me know if you need more guidance navigating the website.
